ZAMBOANGA CITY, May 9 (PNA) – Rio Olympics weightlifting silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz has allocated PHP5 million for the construction of a weightlifting gymnasium here.
The groundbreaking of the project was held Monday in Barangay Mampang, where Hidilyn hails.
The gymnasium was designed by Architect Errold Intong while the construction is being handled by Jecel Arch Builders.
Allen Jayfrus Diaz, a weightlifting coach and a cousin of the Olympic medalist, said the construction of the gymnasium was expected to be completed in August this year.
Weightlifting athletes and other sports enthusiasts witnessed the groundbreaking of the project.
The gymnasium will be a one-storey building with complete weightlifting facilities. It will be open to the public for use for a fee in the morning. It will be used for training by weightlifting athletes in the afternoon.
Hidilyn is coming home in August to lead the inauguration of the gymnasium.
She is currently preparing for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Hidilyn bagged the silver medal in the 53-kilogram female category of the 2016 Rio Olympics.
