Alert port officials intercepted illegal drugs believed to be methamphetamine hydrochloride commonly known as “shabu” during a routine inspection of baggage at the Port of Iligan Thursday night.

A police report reaching here said that the alleged “shabu” weighed about 1 kilogram with an estimated street value of PHP1.4 million.

Virgil Cabili, police investigator, said the contraband was reportedly owned by a certain Jamil Baguan, 32, of Molondo, Lanao Del Sur.

Cabili said that the alleged shabu was neatly wrapped inside a backpack that Baguan reportedly owned.

Baguan was about to board a passenger vessel in Iligan City bound for Cebu City Thursday night when port authorities intercepted the alleged contraband.

Port authorities said that the X-Ray machine noticed the “suspicious item,” which prompted the port police to inspect the bag, which later turned out to have the illegal drug.

Baguan denied ownership of the bag and pointed to an unidentified woman who he claimed asked him some help to carry the bag.

The police are now looking for the woman whom they believed was Baguan’s companion.

The Iligan police has taken custody of Baguan as charges of violation of the comprehensive anti-illegal drug laws are being prepared for filing against him. (PNA)
