Mayors could face suspension if they fail to curb the illegal drug trade in their areas of jurisdictions, President Duterte warned on Wednesday.

The President said local executives who fail to address the drug problem are “inutile” and should just go on vacation.

“If you cannot control drugs in your city, tanggalin kita. I might just outright suspend you. That’s my next move,” the President said during the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption anniversary gathering in Malacañang.

“Magbakasyon ka na lang. Wala pa kayong silbi,” he added.

The President said he expects many court battles with his planned suspension of local government executives found remiss in their duty. He said the court may even issue a temporary restraining order against him but he remains unfazed in imposing sanction against erring local government executives.

Duterte recalled that mayors in Mindanao have already been stripped of police power for failing to address the peace and order problems in their areas.

He said he would not return their police powers if the drug problem persists in their areas.

“If you cannot control drugs in your city, I will just suspend you,” he said. “So I will not return the police power to you. Wala akong pakialam sa inyo,” he added.

At least seven governors and 132 mayors in Mindanao have lost their administrative control over police units based on an order issued by the National Police Commission last month.

The withdrawal of the deputation of the officials was due to their engaging in acts inimical to national security or which negate the effectiveness of the peace and order campaign of the government; and providing material support to criminal elements.
