Geographical Location

Pagadian City, dubbed as the “Little Hongkong” of the South, sits at 07 deg. 49’43”N latitude and 123 deg. 20’4.61” E longitude. It is geographically located at the central- northeastern side of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur in the Island of Mindanao.

It is surrounded on its North-Northwest and North-Northeast by hills and mountains and at the South-Southeast & Southwest with the panoramic Illana Bay.

The city lies at the heart of the new  composition of Region IX and proclaimed as Regional Center. It is composed of (54) barangays, thirteen (13) of which are categorized as urban and the remaining forty-one (41) are categorized as rural.

The City has a total land area of 37,880 hectares or 378.80 square kilometers, which is bounded on the east-northeast by Municipality of Labangan, on the North by the Municipality of Midsalip, on the Northwest, by the Municipality of Lakewood, and at the west-southwest, by the Municipalities of Dumalinao and Tigbao.

On the east-northeast it is accessible to and from the Cities of Tangub, Ozamis, Oroquieta, Dapitan & Dipolog, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro by Bus via two separate routes, namely: the Pagadian-Molave-Osamis-Dipolog and Pagadian-Aurora-Illigan-Cagayan de Oro routes. On the west-northwest, the city is accessible to and from the City of Zamboanga and the Province of Zamboanga Sibugay, and on the southwest, to and from Zamboanga City via Margosatubig and Malangas.

Pagadian has a sister City in the State of New South Wales, Australia, the City of Cooma. This has been effective by virtue of confirming resolution adopted by the Municipal Council of Cooma on April 14, 1975 and resolution No. 41 dated July 21, 1975 of the City Board of Pagadian.

This sister-city relationship has been established through the Philippine-Australian Development Assistance Programme being with contract with the Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation, based in the City of Cooma, which undertook development projects within the Province of Zamboanga del Sur.
