A Filipino worker has been declared brain-dead in a hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia after suffering from stroke, a report by ABS-CBN News said.
Romeo Mendoza suffered stroke reportedly while on duty but has apparently been forgotten by his employer. He was admitted in the hospital since January and hospital bills have risen to over P3 million.
Filipina nurse April Melecio, who is attending to Mendoza at the hospital said bringing the patient to the Philippines allows his family to care for him.
According to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, besides the employer, Mendoza’s deploying agency should also be held responsible for the welfare of the OFW.
“Pababayaran natin sa ahensya ‘yan,” Bello said, threatening to strip the agency of its license should it fail to comply with its responsibilities.
