Cebu City– President Duterte recently directed Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Ronaldo ‘Bato’ dela Rosa to prepare for an intensified war against the New People’s Army (NPA) as soon as the crisis in Marawi City is resolved.
“The order of the President is for me to be ready because after Marawi, we will go after the NPA. He said ‘ubusin natin ‘yan, tapusin natin ang problema sa NPA’,” dela Rosa said Friday night during the gathering of the members of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) in Cebu City.
Dela Rosa said President Duterte issued the order after they visited the Negros policemen who were injured in an ambush staged by NPA members in Guihulngan City.
The ambush resulted in the death of six police officers and one civilian.
“Paulit-ulit nyang sinabi sa akin na dapat trabahuhin na namin ang NPA. We have five more years to go and the President is hoping that the remaining five years will result in a better future for the Filipino people,” Dela Rosa said.
The highest concentration of NPAs in the Philippines is in Eastern Mindanao, particularly in the provinces of Davao, Agusan, and Surigao.
In the Visayas, NPAs are particularly strong in Negros Island, Iloilo, and Samar, dela Rosa said.
The PNP chief added that the NPA earns about P1.2 billion a year from their extortion activities, The biggest source of their income has been from government infrastructure projects.
